September 28: The Last Stand for the Murray

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called on all South Australians to come together and take a last stand for the Murray in Adelaide on Sunday September 28.
“This is the Last Stand: a chance for the South Australian community to come together and stand up for our Storm Boy country before it’s too late,” said Senator Hanson-Young.
“We’ll be sending the message loud and clear to Prime Minister Rudd that we must give the river a drink before Christmas.
“We are rapidly approaching the deadline that the scientists have set for those vital freshwater flows for the lower lakes and Coorong.
“Summer is coming, and with it the heat will rise, and so will evaporation rates.
“We need swift, decisive action now, or else the lakes and Coorong run the very real risk of fading into history.”
The Last Stand rally will be held two days before the urgent Senate Inquiry established by Senator Hanson-Young reports back with its findings, and the weekend before the October meeting of COAG.
“Over the past months we’ve seen communities travel across the state to march on Parliament House, and we’ve seen thousands rally at Goolwa,” said Senator Hanson-Young.
“The community still isn’t ready to give up on the river, and neither are the Greens.
“I look forward to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my fellow South Australians again for our Storm Boy country on September 28,” she said.
