Sarah Hanson-Young named a World Economic Forum, Young Global Leader for 2016

The Leader of the Australian Greens, Richard Di Natale, has congratulated his colleague Sarah Hanson-Young on being named a World Economic Forum, Young Global Leader for 2016.

Senator Hanson-Young will join the 120 other Young Global Leaders for 2016 which include a woman whose company regrows damaged human bones; a scientist developing technology that reuses radioactive waste; ministers shaking up politics; future business leaders; and human rights activists.

Greens say Paris attacks should inspire empathy with asylum seekers

The Australian Greens have welcomed the Syrian refugees beginning to arrive under Australia's emergency intake, cautioning the world against lashing out in anger over the horrific attacks in Paris.

"A united Australian community is much stronger in helping to defeat these threats than one that's divided. Hate is the problem here, it's not the answer," said Greens Leader Richard Di Natale.

"As a community we need to recognise that the people seeking refuge in Australia are fleeing the kind of violence and barbarism that we've seen in Paris.

Greens welcome Robert Simms as new Senator for South Australia

Robert Simms has been sworn in this morning as the Australian Greens' new Senator for South Australia, replacing Penny Wright who stood down for personal reasons earlier this year. Senator Simms will make his first speech to the Senate at 5pm on Tuesday 13 October.

"It's a great privilege to be able to represent my state of South Australia and carry on the good work that Penny Wright did as Senator," said Senator Simms.

"I am excited to be part of such a strong team and look forward to working closely with my new Greens colleagues.

Abbott's Budget has no vision for SA

The 2015 Budget has no vision for the future of South Australia, say SA's Australian Greens Senators.

Senator Penny Wright said the Government was continuing to protect big business at the expense of everyday South Australians.

"The Abbott Government has absolutely no vision for South Australia's future. Rather than finding new sources of revenue from the big end of town, this Budget cuts one vital service to fund another," Senator Wright said.

Faked comments attributed to Senator Hanson-Young

 

An obviously faked version of a statement made by Senator Sarah Hanson-Young on the 16th of December 2014, in the aftermath of the tragic siege in Sydney, has been circulating online.

The photoshopped version of the statement should not be circulated further as the Australian Federal Police are investigating the source of the fabrication.

"It's disappointing that some people have altered the statement in such a sinister way, seeking to impersonate me and politicise this tragic event," Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
