The Cambodian refugee deal has always been an expensive and cruel sham, the Australian Greens have said.
"The Cambodia deal has been a spectacular, 55 million dollar failure from the Abbott government," The Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"Dealing in cruelty with a corrupt regime is a costly business and, in this case, the Abbott government has simply been duped.
"When I went to Cambodia last year, I explained that the writing was on the wall. This was always a sham of a deal but the government's eagerness for cruelty meant that it arrogantly ignored the warning signs.
"The government must now explain what it will do with the men, women and children who are looking at indefinite detention on Nauru. There is nowhere for them to go and they should be brought back to Australia so that they can start to rebuild their lives and contribute to our economy."
