The Greens will move a motion in the Senate this week condemning the SA Government’s $3.5 million cuts to funding for community sporting clubs.
“Community sport is crucial in Australia and I am worried that this decision will rip the heart and soul out of many towns and neighbourhoods across our state,” South Australian Greens Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“The social and health benefits of community sporting clubs are well known and I urge the Premier to recognise that and reinstate the funding that these clubs so desperately need.
“South Australia’s young people deserve to have every opportunity in life and local, community based sporting clubs are an essential part of that.
“The South Australian Government was already lagging behind other states when it comes to funding community sport organisations, but this cut takes it to a new level.
“I am calling on all of my Senate colleagues, but especially those from South Australia, to support my motion this week, calling for the cuts to be reversed.”
