The Australian Government was aware of incidents of abuse against women and children on Nauru long before the Moss review was instigated, yet the Minister continued to detain people on the island, the Australian Greens have said.
“It is abhorrent that despite knowing that women and children were subjected to sexual abuse and harassment both the former and current Immigration Ministers continued to lock people up there”, Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“Even since the damning Moss report has been released Minister Dutton has continued to deport more children back to the hell hole of the Nauru detention camp.”
“There is no moral justification for the Government to keep young women and children locked up in Nauru where they are vulnerable to further abuse.”
“If the Mr Dutton believes child abuse and sexual assault is wrong he must release the women and children who have suffered under lock and key inside Nauru immediately and ban any further transfers to the camp.”
“The Government has been trying to cover-up allegations of abuse inside Nauru for months. No wonder the Government fought so hard to stop the recent Senate iniquity being established.”
“Slowly the truth is coming out. I suspect more will be uncovered throughout the inquiry process.”
