Greens call on Abbott to reject any attempts to stymie Paid Parental Leave scheme

The Australian Greens are calling on Tony Abbott to reject his backbencher Dennis Jensen’s push to delay the introduction of the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave scheme.

"After the worldwide embarrassment caused by having only one woman in cabinet it would be wise for Tony Abbott to ignore Dennis Jensen's attempt to stymie paid parental leave," Greens Senator and spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"The Greens are ready to work hard to deliver an improved paid parental leave scheme. We will be seeking to amend Tony Abbott's plan to make it fairer and to ensure it is implemented sooner.

"Working mothers across Australia deserve a genuine paid parental leave scheme that will offer them crucial time with their baby, as well as protecting their rights at work.

"It is time for Australia to catch up with comparable countries across the globe and any attempt to derail improved support will not be viewed positively by working mums across the nation."
