Direct funding to childcare centres is an essential step to easing cost of living pressure on parents, the Australian Greens said today.
“Breaking the childcare debt cycle with direct payments to childcare centres is a simple step that will go a long way to helping ease the cost of living pressures being felt by Australian families,” the Greens’ childcare spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“While Prime Minster Gillard often says that she recognises the cost of childcare is a significant pressure on Australian households, very little is being done to help them.
“I urge the Prime Minister to take up this initiative while she is in western Sydney as families there have said over and over again that the high cost of child care is a daily concern.
“Many parents are paying very high fees upfront and then waiting weeks, and sometimes months, for the childcare rebate to be delivered to their accounts.
“Direct payments to childcare centres would remove that burden from families and effectively keep fees down at the same time.
“I call on the Prime Minister to listen to the Greens as well as the many parents and industry representatives who support this move by implementing it as soon as possible.”
