Greens paid parental scheme leaves the old parties behind

The Australian Greens have released their fully costed paid parental leave scheme today which is designed to support Australian families and help women stay in the workforce.

"Labor's scheme scrapes together the bare minimum without superannuation whilst Tony Abbott's plan is inequitable," Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.

"We need to do more to support families and keep women in the workforce.

"One way to do that is to offer paid parental leave that's both affordable and fair. We need to recognise that paid parental leave should be a work place right and not a welfare payment.

"Australians care about giving women a fair go in the work force, supporting families and maximising the potential of everyone to contribute to our society.

"That's why the Greens are standing up for a world class paid parental leave scheme that will promote work life balance and boost productivity."

Greens' youth and early childhood spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the Greens' paid parental leave scheme is fairer and more caring than those being offered by both of the old parties.

"Labor's scheme, which is just a dressed up one-size-fits-all welfare payment, doesn't include superannuation payments and will leave mothers disadvantaged in later life," Senator Hanson-Young said.

"Our scheme targets the families who are under pressure, making it more effective than the Coalitions.

"Paid parental leave is too important to be treated like a welfare handout. Australia needs to follow the lead of other countries and link it to a person's actual pay.

"Parliamentary Budget Office costings have shown that a small levy on Australia's biggest businesses, combines with a modest contribution from government, will help to support each and every Australian family.

"Supporting Australian mothers is not just a social necessity but an economical one too. Encouraging women to stay connected to the workforce with adequate support through the early stages of motherhood will pay dividends in years to come."
