The Greens support the AFL in saying ‘No To Homophobia’

Media Release
Sarah Hanson-Young 22 Sep 2012

South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young will be at the AFL preliminary final between the  Crows and Hawthorn in Melbourne today, where a commercial created by the group ‘No To Homophobia’ will be shown.

“I’ll be cheering on the Crows and the new anti-homophobia campaign,” Greens spokesperson for Human Rights Sarah Hanson-Young says.

“It is a great initiative and one that definitely deserves recognition.

“I was very pleased to hear of the AFL’s decision to take up the fight against discrimination as this one move will let thousands of people see that it is not acceptable to discriminate against anyone because of their gender or their sexuality.

“The ‘No To Homophobia’ campaign is a strong voice for a sector of the community that can struggle to be heard in the sporting world and the AFL finals matches are the perfect place for this message.

“I’m also encouraged to hear of a possible ‘pride match’ which would help to further promote positive attitudes towards diversity in the AFL.

“I would like to see all codes of football, and all sports in Australia, follow the AFL’s lead and show their commitment to supporting the LGBTI community now and into the future.”
