QUESTION NUMBER 103 - IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP PORTFOLIO ADDITIONAL ESTIMATES HEARING FEBRUARY 2011
Senator Hanson-Young asked in writing on 13 February 2011:
Out of the almost 500 people who have been in detention for more than 18 months, how many of those people would be waiting their ASIO clearance? Do you suspect that would makeup the bulk of the 900?
It is incorrect to state that almost 500 people have been in detention for more than 18 months. As advised at the hearing, as at 4 February 2011, 59 people have been in detention for more than 18 months (please see L&C 92 of Hansard). Of those who had been in detention for 18 months or more, nine people had been found to be owed protection and were waiting on the outcome of a security assessment by ASIO.
