The Greens have expressed concern over allegations of violence including murder and rape on Manus Island involving detention centre staff and have called on the Australian Government to give a full explanation of what has occurred.
"Reports of a young woman being raped by ex-pat security guards, along with the horrific news that one man was murdered and another lost his hand in a machete attack over the weekend are alarming,” Greens Immigration Spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
"What on earth is going on inside Manus Island? Reports of rape, murder and machete attacks paints a picture of Manus in meltdown.
"If there is any truth to these allegations the Government must explain what they are doing to make staff and refugees safe.
"Is this really the place we are leaving refugees who have fled war and torture?
"The Australian Government must front up and tell the public what is going on. The private contractors Wilson Security and Transfield Services also need to be clear about what they know.
"Is it true that Australian guards been removed from the island after the rape of a local woman?
"Playing secret squirrel over allegations that are this serious is not acceptable from a Government that is spending billions of taxpayers dollars to keep this hellhole open.”
