Around 10,000 South Australian single parents will have their support payments slashed following changes that will take effect from January the 1st.
“It’ll be an unhappy new year for thousands of families around South Australia this January when their already meagre single parents’ payments are cut,” Greens Senator for South Australia, Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“Forcing thousands of single mums to survive on Newstart is the Labor Party’s way of finding a budget surplus on the backs of Australia’s most vulnerable families.
“The Government should dump their surplus fetish and reinstate sufficient support for families.
“It is also concerning that there are still families around South Australia who haven’t even been told that they’ll be losing up to $100 a week, forcing them to live well below the poverty line.
“Many families have already had their Christmas ruined by this terrible news but I really feel for the families who don’t even know yet.
“The Government must ensure every family affected by these payment cuts are told before the end of this week.
“It is the least they could do.
“South Australian mums have voiced their concerns and said that, under these changes, they don’t know how they are going to make ends meet.
“Some have spoken about the fear of losing their homes, others are already living out of their family cars and yet more are worried they’ll no longer be able to provide medicine and education for their children.
“The political race to the bottom has brought us a Labor Party budget with Liberal Party values and it is the single mums of Australia who are being punished.”
