Condolences; Larcombe, Sapper Jamie Ronald

(12.45 pm)—I rise to add the Greens’ support to this condolence motion. We concur with the other speakers and with all senators in sending our condolences to the family, the friends and the colleagues of Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe, who died tragically in a foreign land.

Sapper Jamie Larcombe died in Afghanistan.

He was there serving his country. His body has now been brought home to this nation, which he served so bravely and courageously. Sapper Larcombe was only 21.

(i) the increase in incitement and acts of homophobic violence in Uganda in recent months, and

(ii) in particular, the murder of leading gay rights activist, Mr David Kato;

(i) the Ugandan Government's Anti-Homosexuality Bill, introduced on 14 October 2009, seeks to criminalise homosexuality and impose the death penalty on HIV positive people who have sex, and

Narrung Bund Motion

Senator HANSON-YOUNG (2.36 pm)-My question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Carr. Given recent reports of an increase in self-harm by asylum seekers and the two suicides at the Villawood detention centre in recent weeks, will the government commit to reviewing the mental health services currently provided in immigration detention facilities as a priority?

Migration Amendment (Detention Reform and Prodecural Fairness) Bill 2010

The Migration Amendment (Detention Reform and Procedural Fairness) Bill 2010 seeks to improve the way in which the Migration Act currently operates, by ending offshore processing and the excision policy; ensuring that detention is only used as a last resort; ending indefinite and long-term detention that is the legacy of mandatory detention; and introducing a system of judicial review of detention beyond 30 days.
