Good news for South Australia in climate package: Greens

South Australia will benefit from the historic climate action package which finally puts a price on carbon to cut pollution, the Australian Greens said today.

"The Greens went to the 2010 election promising to take action on climate change, and at last we have the results after many months of negotiations," SA Greens Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, said.

Govt must act to protect water licences from foreign ownership

The Australian Greens are calling on the federal government to alter the powers of the Foreign Investment Review Board to include water licences.

 

It comes amid an overwhelming response from everyday Australians toward the acquisition of prime farming land by foreign companies and shows the Federal government must act to ensure water allocation licences in the Murray Darling Basin and other part of the country are protected.

Attack on campaign is hypocritical

Tens of thousands of people attended peaceful rallies around the country on Sunday in support of action on climate change, despite the Coalition and News Ltd media empire's negative campaign against cutting pollution via a carbon tax.

I am writing this from Christmas Island and could not attend the rally in Adelaide. I am gladdened Australians were not intimidated from speaking out.

The Sunday before the rallies, the News Ltd press attacked proponents of taking action, such as actress Cate Blanchett, for publicly supporting efforts to combat climate change.

After the deluge comes the mud-slinging

They say a week is a long time in politics. Two weeks ago, the floods were a political no-go zone, now it seems the gloves are off. Everyone from Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott, Warren Truss and Anthony Albanese are all warming up for the first mud-slinging session of the year, when parliament resumes next week.The response from both sides of politics to this disaster has been interesting. The Government is rightly pledging to help Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales with their multi-billion dollar clean-up. It's introduced a levy and cuts to services to fund this.

A Lesson For The Majors

Right now I am on an eight-hour road trip to the Thai-Burma border, which gives me time to reflect on the amazing parliamentary year that is finally drawing to a close.

It has been a big year for the Greens - our support has been on the rise, punctuated by a record performance for a third party in both Houses at the federal election in August. More importantly, on a federal level, we are starting to achieve real outcomes, both in terms of expanding the range of political debate and in working to secure improvements to legislation that affects people's lives.
