Greens announce new Senate portfolios

The Australian Greens today announced portfolio allocations for their Senators and MPs ahead of the upcoming Federal Election.

Australian Greens Leader Dr Richard Di Natale said a reallocation had occurred as a result of Mehreen Faruqi’s arrival in the Senate yesterday and Larissa Water’s imminent return.

“We’ve got to hold the big parties to account – and the Australian Greens Senate team will fight for the causes that matter to our community,” Dr Di Natale said.

“This new allocation of portfolios will make the most of each of our Senator’s strengths and passions."

Call to give farmers the legal right to refuse fracking

The Senate notes:

1.    The concern of communities in South Australia and Western Australia about their land and water being threatened by shale and other unconventional gas mining.

2.    That landholders lack the legal right to refuse shale and other unconventional gas mining on their land.

3.    The scientific uncertainty surrounding the environmental and health implications of hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') for shale and other unconventional gas mining.

Greens announce support for wildlife carers in South Australia

The Australian Greens today launched a $15 million plan in Adelaide to help wildlife carers meet the costs of providing quality care for sick and injured native animals.

"Wildlife carers travel great distances to respond to calls for help for injured animals and give countless hours of care. Orphaned joeys or birds, for example, often involve around the clock monitoring and feeding," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.
