Labor and Liberal childcare policies fall short

The Australian Greens have expressed their disappointment at the inability of either Labor or the Liberals to adequately address the current crisis in childcare.

"The Liberal Party's policy would leave hundreds of thousands of families worse off while Labor just want to pump billions of dollars into a failing system," the Greens' early childhood education and care spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Greens push for 10,000 more family reunion visa places

With the family reunion visa system struggling due to limited places, long waiting lists and excessive fees, the Australian Greens have outlined a plan to restore integrity to the beleaguered program.

The Greens plan would immediately make 10,000 more family reunion places available each year and then initiate a detailed review of the family reunion program.

"The family reunion program simply isn't working anymore and we need to get it back on track," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Cambodia: one refugee left as situation deteriorates

The government's deal with Cambodia has failed, with just one refugee remaining in the country, and should be ended immediately the Australian Greens have said.

"Malcolm Turnbull must officially scrap this disastrous deal with Cambodia, before more people are put in harms' way," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"Cambodia is already struggling to care for its people and is facing its own political and security crises. We shouldn't be dumping vulnerable people there.

The Manus Island and Nauru detention camps are not only torturous, but are intentionally design to be so, the Australian Greens have said.

"Tim Costello has simply said what is plainly true about the situation on Manus Island and Nauru," Senator Hanson-Young said.

"This policy of offshore torture, so cherished by the Labor and Liberal parties, is destroying people right in front of our eyes.

Greens: Complicated Nauru pregnancy should have been brought to Australia

The young mother who was sent from Nauru and is now fighting for her life in a Brisbane Hospital, along with her newborn baby, had a complicated pregnancy and should have been brought to Australia long ago, the Australian Greens have said.

"This situation could have been avoided but Peter Dutton chose to let it happen," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Nauru mother and baby critical

Following an emergency medical evacuation after a caesarean birth, all families including women and children on Nauru need to be brought back to Australia, the Australian Greens have said.

"This woman was sent to Nauru against her will and now she and her baby are in a critical condition," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"Once the rules were changed and complex pregnancies were kept on Nauru, doctors knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

Nauru death needs independent investigation

With the death of yet another person in Australia's care on Nauru, the Australian Greens have again expressed their condolences and called for an independent review into the circumstances of this young man's death.

"There needs to be an independent investigation into this man's death," the Green's immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"There are questions to answer about the length of time it took for this man to get sufficient care and what exactly led to this deterioration in his condition.

Today Scott Morrison, the former Immigration Minister, refused to apologise to Save the Children for the baseless and inaccurate accusations that he levelled at their employees, who were subsequently sacked on Nauru.

Court ruling: Minister must provide safe, lawful abortion for Nauru rape victim

The Australian Greens have welcomed the decision of the Federal Court, which has this evening ruled in favour of a Nauru rape victim who the Turnbull Government sent to Papua New Guinea for a termination instead of bringing her to Australia.

Save the Children compensation exposes government’s refugee advocates lies

The government's attempts to blame advocates and support workers for the horrendous situation on Nauru has backfired, with the Immigration Department being forced to pay compensation to Save the Children Australia after accusing its workers of coaching self-harm on the island.

"The situation on Nauru is no one's fault but the government's," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"The shameful practice of the government, which is to blame the victims and those advocating for them, has backfired.
