More funding, not more nannies, needed to address childcare crisis

Australian childcare is in crisis and the Abbott government must commit to increasing funding to the sector, the Australian Greens have said.

"Tony Abbott must fix the crisis in long day care and not just give rich people money so that they can have private nannies," the Greens' childcare spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"The Prime Minister's obsession with funding nannies will come at the cost of the majority of families who have kids in childcare and kindergarten.

The government's decision to hold two pregnant refugees on a bus in the Northern Territory, despite being given refugee status and resettlement on Nauru, is illegal the Australian Greens have said.

Gay refugees on Manus Island will be attacked and imprisoned if resettled in the PNG community, the Australian Greens have said.

"Physical attacks and lengthy prison sentences; that's the reality facing gay refugees the Abbott government has dumped on Manus Island," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Tony Abbott must allow all Coalition members a conscience vote on marriage equality following the introduction of Senator Leyonhjelm's same-sex marriage bill, the Australian Greens have said.

Following her return from a fact-finding mission to Cambodia, the Greens' immigration spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has called on the Abbott government to put their refugee deal to the Australian Parliament.

"If the government believes this dodgy deal is the best way to spend over $40m of tax payer money, they should put it to the Parliament," Senator Hanson-Young said.

Following criticism from Indonesian officials, The Abbott government should apologise and reverse its cruel and xenophobic refugee ban, the Australian Greens have said.

It’s time to leave Nauru: Greens

It is time for Australia to abandon its ill-fated policy of refugee resettlement on Nauru, the Australian Greens have said, as a threatening letter has been sent from Nauruan locals to refugees resettled on the island.

"The refugees are not safe on Nauru," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"The Immigration Minister is actively dumping these people, including families and children, in harm's way.

"The Abbott government must give up on its ill-fated policy of offshore resettlement. There is no life for these refugees on Nauru.
