Greens commend Charles Sturt Council’s vote to support young refugees

Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison will be hearing from the Charles Sturt Council in South Australia after they voted last night to call for the return of two refugee students who were rounded up and taken to a Darwin detention centre a month ago.

All 157 Sri Lankan asylum seekers currently being held in the Curtin detention centre must understand that they have rights in Australia and the Abbott Government must respect those rights, the Australian Greens have said.

The Australian Greens have called on the Abbott Government to immediately send a team of mental health experts to Christmas Island to deal with the current crisis in the centre.

Senate backs refugee children over Abbott cruelty

The Senate has voted in support of a Greens' motion calling on the Immigration Minister to act in the interests of a group of refugee children who have gone into hiding in South Australia.

"The Senate has said that it won't accept the government's cruelty and Tony Abbott needs to take notice," the Greens' immigration spokesperson, Senator Hanson-Young said.

"It's unacceptable that children in South Australia are running scared from the Immigration Minister, their supposed legal guardian.
