REGULATIONS AND DETERMINATIONS - Migration Act 1958 - Disallowance

Senator HANSON-YOUNG (South Australia) (18:03): I move:

That the Migration Amendment Regulations 2011 (No. 4), as contained in Select Legislative Instrument 2011 No. 122 and made under the Migration Act 1958, be disallowed. [F2011L01376]
On 23 August I gave notice of the Greens' intention to move this disallowance to the Migration Amendment Regulations 2011 (No. 4) after numerous community legal centres and pro bono lawyers contacted my office deeply concerned about the impact that this regulation would have on their current and prospective clients.

Senator HANSON-YOUNG (South Australia) (14:23): My question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Carr. My question relates to comments made by Minister Bowen back in August 2006. He told the House:
We say that asylum seekers should be treated the same regardless of how they land. We say they should be dealt with fairly, swiftly and on Australian soil.

As people here would know, I am not only a proud South Australian but also a proud football supporter. Despite the fact that my team, the Double Blues-Sturt-is at the bottom of the SANFL ladder, it is all right; we still have the best ground in the league in the heart of Unley.

That the Senate-

(i) the future of the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) broadcast on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is in doubt, and
(ii) the South Australian Football Association was established in 1877 (later to become the SANFL) making it the oldest football league of any code in Australia and one of the oldest sporting codes in the world;
