Same-Sex Marriages

Senator HANSON-YOUNG (South Australia) (3.40 pm) - I move:

That the Senate -

(a) notes:
(i) the first same-sex marriages were celebrated in Mexico City in the week beginning 7 March 2010, following the recent passage of legislation removing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, under that city's Marriage Act, and

(ii) Mexico City joins Portugal, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Norway, Spain, South Africa and many states in the United States of America that already recognise same-sex marriage as a reality;

Second Speech on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme

(1.05 pm)-I rise today to contribute to this debate on Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Bill 2009 [No. 2] and related legislation. I note that this is the second time I have spoken on this legislation - as it is for many others in this chamber. Despite the amendments and the dirty deal announced by the Prime Minister earlier today, the legislation in front of us is no different to the legislation that we debated some months ago.

Nation Building and Jobs Plan

Senator HANSON-YOUNG (2.29 pm) - My question today is to the Minister for Climate Change and Water, Senator Wong.

Minister, of course, as a South Australian senator, you are aware of the dire state of South Australia's Lower Lakes. During the negotiations and debate over the stimulus package back in February this year, $10 million for a bioremediation program was agreed to by the government as part of the Nation Building and Jobs Plan. Could the minister please update the chamber on where we are up to in implementing this program?

Greens join with Coalition to move for Inquiry into rural, regional uni struggles

The Greens have joined forces with the Coalition to move for a Senate Inquiry into how to better support rural and regional students in the wake of changes to Youth Allowance.

Today Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Nationals Senator Fiona Nash gave notice of motion to refer the Youth Allowance changes’ impact on rural and regional students to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee.

Greens urge Coalition to back Youth Allowance amendment in Senate

The Greens are urging the Coalition to support their move to amend the retrospectivity of proposed changes to Youth Allowance eligibility in the Federal Budget when the legislation comes before the Senate.

The Nationals today joined the Greens in supporting a move for a Senate Inquiry into the Youth Allowance issue and its impact on rural and regional students.
